Abstract

A bag (1) is singled-out from a supply (3) of bags, is gripped by tongs-like gripping means (2) at the sides below its upper end, at which upper end the mouth of the bag is located, and the gripping means (2) are pivoted to move the bag (1) to an opening station. At the opening station the mouth is opened by relatively movable suction bars (10, 11) and portions (21) on two spreading fingers (18) are engaged in the bag and moved laterally by pivoting movement of the fingers (18). The spreading fingers (18) are suspended on parallel swinging support members (22, 23) which are operated to transport the bag (1) from the opening station to the filling connection and to engage the bag on the filling connection. <IMAGE>
