Abstract

A process for extracting and recovering organic acid by-products present in an oxidation mixture obtained by oxidation of a cycloalkane e.g. cyclohexane or cyclopentadecane with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas comprises conducting the extraction using an alkali solution. The alkali which may be an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, ammonia or an amine is used in an amount of 0.1 to 50% by weight of the amount required to neutralize all of the organic acid by- products in the oxidation mixture. This process mitigates the problems of formation of high molecular weight materials present in water extraction processes and avoids having to use acid to convert the salts of the organic acid by-products back to the free acids.
