Abstract

Tread surfaces.-Spaced transverse incisions 4 are cut in the tread portion of a solid or other elastic tyre leaving the base portion continuous and the individual tread elements in contact. In the case of wide tyres a circumferential incision 28 may also be made. Figs. 4 and 6 show apparatus for making the incisions 4, 28 respectively. Referring to Fig. 4, a knife 12 is reciprocated across the tyre 2 by rack-and-pinion mechanism 16, 15, the knife being carried by a slide 11 guided in a frame 10. The frame 10 is fitted with adjustable clamps 19, 21 for engagement with the rim 1 to which the tyre is vulcanized. A pointer 27 is fitted for equally spacing the cuts. For effecting the circumferential cut, the tyre is carried on a roller 30, Fig. 6, a rotary cutter 33 being fed into the tyre-tread by a screw 37.
