Abstract

196,985. Rusdell, W. J. Jan. 28, 1922. L i q u i d - pressure engines, - A method of producing power from liquid under pressure by means of a piston and column of liquid consists in causing the liquid column alternately to gain velocity at substantially constant acceleration during the working strokes and to lose velocity at substantially constant retardation during the intervening periods. The constant acceleration may be imparted by causing a reciprocating piston, during a considerable part of the strokes in the direction of flow, to exert substantially constant pressure against the liquid column. In the case of forcing the liquid, the piston 6 may be actuated by a specially shaped cam 1 engaging a roller 3 on the piston rod. The piston rod may be controlled by a radius arm. In other forms the cam engages a curved lever connected to the piston; or two pistons are actuated by the cam through two bell-crank levers, or the piston rod is adjustably connected to a lever acted on by two cams; or the piston is connected to a lever actuated by a crank, and the movement of the lever is controlled by a cam engaging its end. The piston may be replaced by a reciprocating or oscillating tube provided with inlet valves, cushioning springs &c., such as are described in Specification 160,120. [Class 102 (i), Pumps &c.], may be used to permit the piston to follow the motion of the liquid column without shock.
