Abstract
196,400. Hill, T. G. Jan. 28, 1922. Axial-flow type; vanes; driving and transmission mechanism.-A water turbine adapted to be worked by ebb or flow of tides or by a river current comprises sets of axial-flow water wheels on two shafts in a casing. Each alternate wheel is free on its shaft and gears by peripheral teeth with fixed wheels on the other shaft. Thus both shafts are driven in the same direction land are geared together by a chain gear. Fig. 2 shows a few of the wheels on one shaft Q, the other shaft being immediately behind. Each water wheel has preferably nineteen vanes 5, which slant oppositely in adjacent wheels, and are surrounded by toothed metal rings A<1> running in grooves 23 in the casing and gearing with similar toothed rings on the adjacent water wheel on the other shaft. The wheels are separated by ball bearings 16, and sand or silt is prevented from reaching these by metal rings 21, Fig. 9, resting on rubber rings 20 at the hubs of the wheels. The shafts Q are connected by a chain gear 4, Fig. 2, and power transmission is effected through bevel wheels P, P<1> and a vertical shaft. Figs. 5, 6 show front and sectional views of the corrugated vanes 5. Preferably 24 water wheels are used on each main shaft Q.
