Abstract

194,247. Cachemaille, A. S., (Westing- house Electric & Manufacturing Co.). March 8, 1922. Systems depending on the use of two or more motors; series-parallel systems.-Relates to control systems for a number of motors grouped in pairs and having shunt field windings, each pair working independently as in the propulsion of submarines. Each pair of motors is provided with armature resistances (not shown), field resistances consisting of two equal sectional resistances 40, 41, a master controller 34, and a cutout drum 36. According to the invention, the field-strengths of the motors are initially equalized by a separate rheostat switch 37. The motors are started by turning the master controller from the ' off ' position shown. For forward running, the upper portion 32 of the drumcontact is used, thereby first cutting resistance out of the armature circuits, and afterwards weakening the fields of the motors equally and simultaneously. For reverse running, the lower portion 33 is used, giving a similar sequence of operations, but with fewer steps. To cut-out either motor. for example in case of disablement, the drum 36 is turned right or left from the normal central position, thereby removing one motor from the circuit and simultaneously excluding the resistance 40.
