Abstract
192,211. White, A. E., (Goodrich Co., B. F.). Nov. 11, 1921. Moulding wheel tyres.-A cushion tyre. 10, Fig. 1, is moulded on a foundation band 17 with core members 19 which are finally removed through one or mcre slots in the, band, leaving a channel in the tyre in communication with the slots. Preferably hard rubber 16, Fig. 2, is applied to the band 17 and is cut away at the slots, a split ring 20 is then placed in the band 17 and the members 19 are assembled in the slots, the last member being placed between the slightly projecting ends of the adjacent members and forced on to the ring 20. Softer rubber layers are wound on by rotation of the band and cores in a vertical plane and after vulcanization in a rigid mould, the ring 20 and the members 19 are removed through the slots, a hook 32 being used for this purpose. The members 19 may be assembled from inside the band 17 and be forced outwardly by the ring 20. The hard rubber 16 may be applied after the assembly of the members 19 so that it may be warm when the softer layers are applied. The members 19 may have tongue and groove connection between adjacent ends. A rubberized tape may be laid along the ridge of the members 19 to prevent relative displacement, the tape being left in the completed tyre. The band 17 may be in two side rings connected by the bridge-pieces 18 between the slots. The bridge-pieces are preferably permanently united with at least one side ring. The tyre may be used on a perforated fellce.
