4352. Cole, Marchent, & Morley, Brailsford, R. S., and Spooner, W. W. March 19. Safety-valves; actuating; lift valves.-A combined exhaust and drain or relief valve for a steam-engine comprises a valve a seated on a ring valve c which is seated in the end of the exhaust passage b of the engine cylinder. The valve c is opened by excess pressure, against the action of a spring q, while the valve a is opened mechanically, against the action of a spring and the pressure in the passage b. The spindle e of the valve a passes through a sleeve d forming the spindle of the valve c, and has a head sliding in a guide at the end of the sleeve d. The valve a is operated from a cam shaft m, at each exhaust stroke of the engine, or it is held permanently open or permanently closed.
