Abstract
2588. Ricardo, H. R. Feb. 18. Four-stroke-cycle engines.-In a four-strokecycle engine working with super-compression, the piston E which is a free fit in the cylinder A has a trunk extension E<1> of lesser diameter than itself working in a cylinder forming an extension of the main cylinder A, the annular space C between the two cylinders acting as a pump chamber. The space C communicates with the main cylinder through ports A<1> which are uncovered by the main piston near the end of its stroke. Air enters the pump chamber C through ports D<1> controlled by spring strips D<2>. A disk H having perforations registering with the openings D<1> may be rotated to regulate the admission of air to the chamber C. The cylinder is provided with inlet and exhaust valves F and G. Holes E<2> in the trunk E<1> admit a further supply of air to the pump at the top of the piston stroke. The cylinder B is lined with antifriction metal and forms apiston guide. The gudgeon pin. J is so' positioned in the trunk that it reciprocates within the length of the cylinder B. The piston E and trunk E<1> are formed of forged steel, aluminium or other metal of high conductivity. In a modification a multi-cylinder engine is shown in which the trunk is locally strengthened for mounting the gudgeon pin and a different form of lining is shown. Each cylinder may be provided with two exhaust ports controlled by separate valves.
