Abstract

6181. Torday, G. March 11, 1913, [Convention date]. Projectiles; projectile fuses. -Relates to projectiles made in parts adapted to be separated by a time fuse during flight, and provided with balls, which are released at the same time, but remain connected by wires or chains to the main body of the projectile. According to the invention, the balls are carried in cylindrical arms, which swing out to release the balls. In the form shown in section in Fig. 1, the tubular arms 7 are pivoted at 10 in recesses in the body 1 of the projectile, and are retained therein by a surrounding casing 15, secured to the part 4 of the body by longitudinalscrew-bolts. The arms 7 contain wire ropes 11 fixed at the ends 12 to the arms and having balls 14 at their other ends. The casing 15 encloses an explosive charge 16, connected by a central duct 6 and a radial duct 28 to a time ring 19 comprising two grooves 20, 21 connected by a duct 22, Fig. 8; a vent 23 is also provided in the groove 20. The time ring is ignited by a pellet 25 which sets back and strikes a pin 27 when the projectile is fired. The pellet 25 is held at safe, before the projectile is loaded into the gun, by a removable pin 26. When the charge 16 explodes, the casing 15 is driven rearwards from the body 1, the arms 7 swing outwards, and the balls 14 fly out to the limit of their anchoring-wires 11. The nose 30 of the projectile has a cavity which is filled with an explosive charge.
