Abstract

[Cognate Applications, 18,307/13 and 24,344/13.] Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Relates to chain shot and consists in making them with an outer shell A, Fig. 1, containing one or more wire ropes G attached at one end to one or more striking- devices F, and at the other end to the body of the shell, for example by means of a cross-pin H, the shell containing an explosive charge D adapted during flight to detach the rear part of the shell, thus allowing the wire ropes to extend out and the striking-devices to drag behind the shell and to swirl round while the main body of the shell continues its course more or less undisturbed. A smoke-producing charge I may also be provided and ignited when the explosive charge D is fired; and an explosive charge may also be provided to burst the shell when ignited by an ordinary fuse, or when the striking- devices are caught by an object, said charge being then fired by friction fuses M<1>, N<1>, Fig. 9, ignited by the pull of the wires, which are attached to the rods M, N of these fuses. Striking - devices may also be secured to the wires at certain distances from their ends.
