Abstract

[Addition to 560/14, Class 7 (v), Internal-combustion engines, Starting &c.] Automatic circuitbreakers; switches, quick-action; switches, actuating; switches, contact member momentarily operated. - In switches used with engine turning-gear, the switch contacts m, n, Fig. 1, are normally held open by a spring k and may be closed by raising the armature l by hand, when the electro-magnet b will hold the contacts closed until the back electro-motive force of the electric motor causes the current to drop ; or the circuit through the winding of the electro-magnet may be momentarily closed by pressing in a pedal o, which through the spring u moves the headed rod s. This rod is held slightly by a spring-ball t until the ball is pushed inwards when the rod strikes a second spring-ball t' to close the contacts p, q. A spring r returns the pedal and rod to normal position. In a modification, a pedal actuated switch as described is used to close an independent winding on the electro-magnet so as to close the contacts m., n the winding in series with the motor holding these contacts closed. As shown in Fig. 3, the switch contacts are closed by moving a lever 13 from position 0 to position I. This moves a bar 14 which carries by a spring 20 a cam bowl 21 which rides on the upper face of a cam surface 23. The bowl strikes a projection 12 on the armature l and closes the contacts. A spring 32 returns the lever and bar to their normal position; in the return movement the cam bowl rides on the under surface of the cam. In another arrangement, a centrifugal governor has a lost-motion connexion with a sliding box carrying spring contacts which are drawn towards the co-operating contacts by a spring; the box is held with the contacts disengaged by a spring-controlled hand-lever; when the lever is turned the contacts engage: they are drawn out of engagement when the speed of the governor attains a certain value.
