Abstract
25,636. Beck, W. S. Nov. 10. Track apparatus for stopping trains. - The brake valve is opened more or less, according to the force of the impact of a member on the track with one of two levers which move about their pivot simultaneously on the train, one of the levers coacting with a track device in connexion with the signals and the other with a speed - limiting track device. A T- lever 12, 15 pivoted to turn about a pin 13, raises a second T-bar 17, the top end of which serves as a detent for a spring-controlled sliding bar 23, which has stepped portions 26 so that the amount of its travel is determined by the distance through which the member 17 is raised. The lever 12 engages a track stop 7, which is set up when the signal is at danger; the bar 39 engages a counterbalanced arm 35 placed at positions where limitation of speed is necessary. The bar 39 is moved up and down on the bar 12 by connexions to a speed governor, including a cam 42, links 46, 44, and bell-crank 45. The bar 23 is reset by the link 50 and pin- and-slot connexion; but a projection on the bell-crank 45 prevents movement of the pin 51 if the speed is high. The contact-members are fitted at each side of the engine and are crossconnected. In order to apply greater brake power at the rear of the train, a valve 58, Fig. 7, is fitted to the train-pipe at that end. This valve is arranged so that, when the valve 24 on the locomotive is opened by the apparatus described above, the reduction of pressure below the piston 59 allows the spring 64 to open the train-pipe 5 to the exhaust ports 62. Slight modifications are made for use with vacuum brakes.
