Abstract

18,345. Aird, W. D. Aug. 12. Track apparatus for stopping trains. - The brake pipe is opened and sand applied to the rails by engagement of a lever 35 with a track contact 6. The track contact 6 is raised in vertical guides 7 by a rod 10 pivoted to a pivoted disk 9, either in conjunction with the signals or independently. The lever 35 turns the cock 25 to open the brake pipe to atmosphere and by levers 28, 22 opens one of two valves 20 which supply compressed air to a casing 17 so as to supply sand from the dome 15 to one of the pipes 18 according to the direction of motion of the train. The brake pipe may be closed at the valve 29 by the driver actuating levers 33, 32, 31, 30, but this action opens the valve 38 which causes a whistle 36 to sound as a reminder.
