Abstract

Picking; galvanizing and coating by dipping. - Relates to a process for preventing the formation of dross &c. in the bath of zinc or other metal employed in coating iron or steel wire, strips, bands, sheets, &c. The iron or steel a is subjected consecutively to an acidbath d, an electrolytic bath c containing an electrolyte of a solution of a metal (other than iron) capable of being electrolytically deposited on the iron or steel, and a bath b of molten zinc or other coating-metal. The electrolytic bath has the effect of removing any oxide left on the iron or steel and decomposing any iron chloride left on the surface as a result of the pickling operation, and also of depositing a thin film of metal, such as tin or zinc, on the surface, thereby preventing oxidation on the way to the molten metal bath. The Provisional Specification refers also to the coating of metals other than iron and steel.
