Abstract
3858. Hughes, H. E., Thwaites, J. H., and Craven, J. T. Feb. 15. Grates; ashes, &c., removing; air supply, heating.-Grates, more especially for refusedestructor furnaces, are formed of pivotallymounted sets of fire-bars with curved or arcshaped supporting-surfaces of such radii that the extremities of each set can be moved over the supporting-surface of an adjacent set to remove the clinker. In Fig. 1 is shown a grate formed of side members 1, 2 pivoted at 3, 4, and a central member 6 pivoted at 7. The supporting-surfaces 5, 8, 9 of the members are formed as arcs of the same radius. By rotating the central member 6, its extremities clinker the surfaces 5 of the side members, while Fig. 4 shows the position of the parts when clinkering the surfaces of the central member by the extremities of the side members. The pivots 3, 4, 7 may be rotated by gearing, such as worm gearing. The clinkers are deposited in trucks 10, a bar 11 being provided to break the clinker deposited from the central member 6. Forced draught may be heated in the ash-pit by the clinker. Grates are also described having two pivoted members.
