Operating doors by lever mechanism. - Relates to means for closing and locking a porthole of a ship or any other orifice of the kind comprising a carrier, mounted to turn axially, a locking - member mounted on the carrier and adapted to turn in a plane at an angle to that in which the carrier turns and engage locking-parts on the device, and means for turning the locking-member in one plane and then to swinging the closing- piece clear of the orifice by turning the carrier in another plane. The locking - member is adapted to engage a guide which retains the locking-member in fixed relation to the carrier until the device is free to turn clear of the orifice. The frame b<1> of the porthole a hinges on a pin b<1> and carries a locking-ring c provided with rollers c<1> engaging cam-surfaces a<1> on the ship's hull. The ring c is rotated by means of the lever d', which is first turned to release the rollers c<1> and may then be rotated about the pin d<2> to open the porthole. The locking-ring c is further provided with a projection c<2>, which on rotation of the ring c engages a guide h<1> on the stationary part of the hinge. When the ring c has moved sufficiently to disengage the rollers c<1>, the projection c<2> is then opposite the groove h, and the light may then be opened about the hinge. In a modification, the carrier may be arranged to slide along supports, and the lever and link may be provided with keyways whereby they may be readily detachable in certain open positions.
