Abstract

Submarine vessels. - Means are provided whereby the ordinary trimming - tanks are utilized to preserve the proper trim of submarine vessels when the trim is disturbed by the discharge of a torpedo, instead of special compensating tanks. The forward tank b may be put in communication with the sea through the valve d and is connected to a compressed-air reservoir by a pipe f. The bow torpedo-tube has a pipe n which may be put in communication with the tank b through the valve u. The forward and aft tanks are connected by a pipe p, through which water may be transferred from one to the other by means of a pump q. A pipe v connects this pipe p with the pipe n. An excess capacity is provided in the tank b equal to the terminal volume of the tube j plus the volume of the torpedo m<1> multiplied by the number of spare torpedoes. The excess capacity of the aft tank is equal to the volume of water, the weight of which equals the weight of the spare torpedoes multiplied by the distance moved during the loading operation and divided by the distance between the centres of gravity of the fore and aft tanks. After firing the torpedo m<1>, the bow cap is closed and compressed air is admitted to the tube j by the pipe v forcing the water into the tank b. Should the centre of gravity of the tank b not coincide with the tube j, compensation is effected by the pump q. If air-pressure is used to transfer the water, the valves u, z are closed and the valves s, x opened. The water passing aft is then regulated by the valve x. When a fresh torpedo is moved into the tube j water is again transferred from the forward tank b to the after tank. A central submergence tank 7 may also be utilized to assist in the trimming of the vessel by being connected to the pipe system above described.
