Abstract
8769. Nobel's Explosives Co., [Wilson, J. M.]. April 12. Explosives.-Consists in making a gelatinous dynamite in a granular form. An example contains as active substance 62 parts of nitroglycerine, 3À5 parts of nitro-cotton, 6À13 parts of pulp, 21À5 parts of nitrate of potash, and as inert substance 4À87 parts of kieselguhr, 1 part of carbonate of magnesia, and 1 part of red oxide of iron. The nitro - glycerine, the nitro-cotton, and 3 parts of the kieselguhr are mixed together and allowed to stand. The mixture is then run in a water-jacketed gelatine pan not above 50‹ C.; after 5 minutes, the nitrate of potash is added; after another 5 minutes the remainder of the kieselguhr and the other substances, previously mixed together, are added. The operation is stopped as soon as the mixture assumes a uniformly-coloured mealy appearance. Further treatment would result in cohesion and prevent formation of a granular explosive.
