Abstract

15,651. Fairweather, W., [Underwood Typewriter Co.]. July 5. Feeding sheets; pile tables; sheet separators. - I n stencil-duplicating or other printing machines in which set-off sheets are used, the set-off sheets are fed from a pile 55 vertically below the sheets 11 to be printed on. In each case the pile of sheets is placed on a table between spring- pressed front clips 63 and an adjustable back - stop with a sliding presser-bar 88. A friction sepa rating-roller 56 is carried back and forth over the pile by arms 57 pivoted to extensions 58 of slides 14 reciprocated by a crank 17 actuated by gearing 24, 7, 8, 9 from the stencil drum 1, which may be removable. On its backward motion the roller is free to rotate until near the end of its stroke, when a projecting stop 60 engages a lever 47 and releases a catch 42, Fig. 5, and allows a lever 37 to rise. This permits a clutch ball to rise by spring pressure and wedge against the disk 31 thus preventing further rotation of the roller 56, which then buckles the top sheet against the stop 88, and releases it from the clips 63. On the forward motion, the roller 56 is prevented from turning by the clutch ball 28, and the sheet is therefore fed forward. Towards the end of the forward stroke, the clutch ball is released by a stop 59 engaging an arm 39 and re-setting the lever 37. From the top pile 11 the sheet passes between the printing-roller 1 and the pressure roller 3, while, simultaneously, a sheet from the pile 55 passes up the guide 65, between the rolls 66, 67, and is delivered below the printed sheet. The slides 14 are made to move simultaneously, although only one is driven, by wheels 22 on a shaft 15 engaging with fixed racks 23 on each side of the machine. The pressure on the roller 3 may be varied by a segment and gear operating a cam, as shown in Fig. 2. When introducing a fresh pile of papers, the clips 63 are raised by levers 85, or by cams 71. Ratchet clutches may be used instead of ball clutches to hold the rollers 56.
