Abstract
13,369. O'Sullivan, J. June 8. Locking nuts.-A nut or stud contains a pivoted pawl pressed by a spring so as to engage with ratchet teeth cut in a fixed washer or in the work. Fig. 1 shows one form in which the teeth are cut in the top of the washer 3. A hole 11 is for releasing. Fig. 5 shows a form in which the teeth are cut in the edge of the washer 14, the pawl 9<c> being then mounted on a pivot lying in the same direction as the bolt. In another form, the teeth are cut on the inner face of a turned-up rim of the washer. Fig. 3 shows a manner of securing a wheel axle with two nuts on opposite threads, both nuts being locked as above. A cap 15 covers the whole for the purpose of keeping out dirt, and is itself locked by means of a pawl 9 and ratchet teeth 7. A single nut may be used with a covering-cap.
