Abstract

26,731. Green, G., and Miller, J. Dec. 9. Gas and like engines, valve-gear for. In an engine having an overhead cam-shaft a, with a casing carrying the valve-levers f, and pivoted to turn about the cam-shaft so as to provide access to the valves, the casing is provided with lateral extensions e enclosing the valve-levers and forming guides for the tappets x. The casing is formed in two parts with an oil-tight joint at s ; the lower part forms an oil-bath for the cams, and the two parts are held together by a set-screw t. The adjacent extensions e are held down by a bridgepiece n secured by a single nut, and make a tight joint with domesp over the valves. The arrangement permits of efficient lubrication of the valve mechanism, without allowing the escape of fumes from any oil that may be burnt or vaporized. The valve-levers are provided with adjustable striking- pins k, access to which is provided by openings o closed by the bridge-piece n. In a modification, the cam-shaft is arranged centrally between the valves, and the valves are operated through bellcrank levers pivoted approximately above the camshaft, the extensions e being alternately on either side of the shaft. If desired, only those parts of the casing to which the extensions are attached, or only the extensions themselves, are rotated.
