Abstract

9873. Wood, J. May 6. Overwinding, preventing ; speed, governing.- Apparatus for preventing overwinding in mines &c., such for example as is referred to in Specification No. 9685, A.D. 1908, is fitted with governor mechanism for stopping the engine automatically if the speed becomes excessive at any part of the wind. The shaft D, driven from the engine or winding-drum, is connected by bevel and worm gearing to a shaft E, which carries tappet arms adapted to strike catches F. These catches are supported on arms F<1>, which are swung inwards by links connected to one or more governors I', so as to lie in the path of the tappet arms. This mechanism is adapted to stop the engine if the speed is too high near the end of the wind. The shaft E is also fitted with a toothed disk L, the teeth of which do not project so far as the tappets. If the speed is excessive during any part of the wind, a second pair of catches F are swung inwards by the slow-speed governor, so that one of them is engaged and raised by the toothed disk L. The arms F<1> are connected to a pawl which is raised and causes the engine to be stopped. To prevent accidental engagement of the parts F, L, the governor is fitted with a slotted link N which raises a weighted lever M before the catches F can be swung into engagement with the toothed disk L.
