Abstract

10,867. Donovan, E. W. May 24. Billiards. - Billiard-table pockets are constructed to facilitate the withdrawal of balls from them. In the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a leather cup b is fixed to the table, or suspended from the table by means of netting. The cup b is strengthened by a metal ring c, preferably by three wires d which support, a ring e, upon which are eccentrically mounted disks f of leather or vulcanized rubber &c. A metal ring g is free to slide on the cup b, and it is provided with an internal shoulder o, which normally bears on the disks f and keeps these in the position shown in Fig. 2, so as to retain a ball in the pocket. To remove the ball, the ring g is raised to the position shown in Fig. 3, and this allows the ball to move the disksf and fall into the hand which is used to raise the ring g. The ring g is raised by means of a ring k, which may be covered with soft material, and is connected to the ring g by arms m. The disks f may be replaced by spheres, rings, cylinders, or triangular plates. In a modification, Fig. 4, the ball is retained by spheres s on rods t pivoted to a ring or cylinder u, the spheres s being kept in their closed position by a ring v suspended from chains w. The ring v is raised similarly to the ring g, Figs. 2 and 3. In a modified form of this construction, the spheres 8 are normally engaged by a ring similar to the ring v, this ring having an upwardly-flared top portion which is pulled upwards by springs. In this form, the ring v has to be depressed in order to release the ball.
