Abstract

25,657. Zapf, G. Nov. 24. Lightning - arresters. -Consists of a device for relieving overcharges on electric conductors, and comprises two electrodes, one connected to the conductor and the other to earth, these electrodes being at a greater distance apart than corresponds to the potential at which discharge is wished to take place, together with means for starting wave movements between the electrodes. The discharge terminals m, n are placed at a distance apart four to six times as great as the sparking distance for the given potential. Connected to the main conductor l is a second wire which leads, through a high resistance or condenser w, to another discharge terminal o which is placed at the sparking distance proper to the given potential. A small discharge between the terminals n, o sets up waves sufficient to cause a discharge between m, n. Accidental short-circuits between the former pair will involve little loss, as they will not set up the discharge between the more distant terminals.
