Abstract

9728. Boyd, T. A., and Boyd, J. & T. May 9. Stop-motions; rollers and roller heads.-Reference is made to Specification No. 16,924, A.D. 1898. In twisting-machines, vertical trap rollers 4 are employed, each roller being arranged to slide on a vertical spindle and driven by the bevel gearing 5, 6 from a longitudinal shaft 7. The upright rod 8 carries a vertical wire or rod 9, which projects beneath the roller, and when the rod 8 rises, owing to the operation of the automatic stop-motion, the roller 4 and its bevel-wheel 5 are lifted so that the driving-wheels are no longer in gear and the roller stops. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a cam surface 13<1> is fixed on the lower part of the roller 13, and a projection 14<1> on the balanced lever 14, so that, when the front end of the lever rises on the breakage of a thread, the projection 14<1> engages with the cam 13', and the roller continuing to rotate, is automatically lifted so as to disconnect the driving-gear ; 17 is a cam lever, by which, when the roller has been stopped, the rod 18 may be raised by hand for stopping the spindle. The parts are reset by depressing the lever 14. The hollow vertical trap roller may be covered with an endless band of leather or other suitable material, the roller being provided with a vertical slit through which the endless band is passed and secured by means of a tapered peg or rod 23, the inside of the cup-shaped roller being correspondingly tapered. The Provisional Specification describes the application of a water trough to the machine.
