SPINNING AND TWISTING IEZAPER AND OTHER EZB QUS MATERIALS.
1'0 166 whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS ALEXANDER BOYD, a subject of His Majesty King George, King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Spinning and Twisting Paper and other Fibrous Materials, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for spinning and twisting paper or otherfibrous materials into yarn or twine and has forits object means for damping the said mateduring the process of'spinnin'g or twisting and also improved means of stopping and starting the spindles of such frames in conjunction with the said damping process.
My invention consists of a delivery roller,
adamping roller and a trough of water or other liquid so arranged that on the-de-' the dampinglivery roller; being, stopped roller is lifted from contact with theliquid and thus ceases to damp the paper or other material being spun or twisted.
Accompanying this specification is one sheet of drawings.
My invention also includes means of stopping the spindles in conjunction with the said delivery and damping rollers.
-In carrying out my invention in one arrangement in' which a strip of paper is drawn .from a roll, damped, twisted and wound on to a bobbin, I employ a' vertical ring twisting spindle 1, mounted on a spindle rail 2, a tin drum?) and a cord 4;, to drive the spindle 1, all of ordinary-construction. Onthe spindle I mount a bobbin 5', upon 6 is Wound by means travelers 7 operated in the of a ring and On the framing Iplace a top usual manner.
rail 8 above and behind-the spindle 1. On
the top; rail 8 1' mount a low delivery roller 9 driven-in relation to the spindle 1 in the usual manner. Above the low de- I-mount a top delivery roller 10, which-'s driven by frictional contactwith the former. The top delivery i'bller10 has a groove 10 in which I place a ring of india rubber or some soft substance adapted to grip and deliver the paper strip 6 as it is being twisted.
The top delivery roller 10 is carried on a stud 11 fixed to the upper end of a bell Specification-of Letters Patent. Application filed April 30,1914. Serial No. 835,515.
around the tin roller 3, and back to the spindle 1. When the Patented May 11, rate.
crank lever 12 which is mounted upon a shaft '13 in front of and parallel with the low delivery roller 9. The bell crank lever referred to has a horizontal limb 12 passing inward below the low delivery roller 9. At the inner end 12. of the said bell crank lever 12 I suspend a weight 12 which'causes the top delivery roller 1i to press upon and get driven by the low delivery roller 9. The horizontal limb 12 of the bell crank lever "12 is lifted at its inner end 12 as hereafter described, when the top roller 10 has to be stopped. On the spindle rail 2 behind the spindle 1 I mount a tension bracket 14 with a horizontal pivot 14 on which I mount a cord' tensionlever 15 extending inward toward the tin "roller 3,. and having at its inner end a tension roll 16. Thespi'ndle cord a is passed around the spindle wherve 1 over the tension roll 16, beneath and tension roll 16 is held at its highest point the-spindle cord 4 1 is tightened and drives the spindle 1. When it is lowered the spindle. cord 4 is slackened and ceases to drive the spindle. By means of a cord grip of ordinary construction'the spindle cord is gripped when it is slackened so as to insure that the spindle will stop.
The cord tension lever 15 extends over a short distance front of its pivot 14: and
carries on a T shaped adjusting screw .17,
tefision lever 151s raised to its highest point p At the inner end 18 of the horizontal limb 18 of the vertical rod 18 I .fix a cross pin 21 which passes beneath the horizontal limb 12 of the bell crank lever 12 and which lifts the bell crank'lever 12 when the vertical rod 18 is disengaged and rises. On the end 18 of the horizontal limb 18 of the vertical rod 1 fix a hand lever 22 standing upward to enable thG WOIkBI to draw the vertical rod 18 clear of its catch at its inner end.
the trough 23.
plate 19 and thus stop the spindle l and raise the top delivery roller 10 clear of the low delivery roller 9.
hind the low delivery roller 9 I mount a trough 23 in which a liquid is placed for the purpose of damping the strip of paper or other material 6 Behind and above the trough 23 I mount a horizontal shaft 24 in suitable bearings which are carried on the to rrail 8. At the end of the said shaft 24 a hand quadrant 25 by means of which the shaft is turned on its axis and fixed at any particular point after described.- On this shaft 24 I mount loosely a} dip lever 26 with a limb projecting forward over the edge of the trough. On this dip lever 26 I mount on a stud a loose roll 27 which dips into the liquid in On the shaft 24 carrying the dip lever 26 I fix a boss having a cross pin 29 passing under and supporting the dip lever 26 so that on the shaft 24 being operated by the quadrant 25, before referred to, one way or other the dip lever 26 is loweredinto or raised partly or entirely out of In this way the depth to which the dip roll a' enters the liquid may be ad justed. 'The shaft 24; referred similar dip levers for a gpoup of spindles. By means of the'quadrant 25 all the dip levers 27 mounted on the shaft areliited clear of the liquid when the frame is stopped so astoprevent ove -damping porarily. To accomplish this I 19. The downward lever 26. When the vertical rod 18 1 ferred to,
, catch plate and weakening of the strip of paper or other material. It is also important..jwhen an. individual spindle 1 is'sto ped andthe top delivery roller 10 is lifts clear of the low roller 9 to lift the dip lever 26 and its roll 27 clear of the iquidsoasto prevent over-damping and weakening of the strip of paper or other material when thespindle is stopped tenr. in: a cross stud 30 on the hand lever 22 before described as carried on the end 18 of the horizontal limb 18 of the .vertical rod 18. The stud 30 referred to is below and clear. of the dip rises to its highest position raising the top delivery roller IO-ofi the low delivery roller 9, it at the same time. by means of the stud 30 re: lifts the dip lever 26 and roll 27 clear of the water in the trough. On the '19 I pivot in a pair of vertical lugs 19 a horizontal hand lever 31 so ar'- ranged that on its being pressed down at its cut end, it carries with it the upright rod until'the latter engages with its catch plate movement of the upthe s indle cord 4, thus r- 1ving the spindle 1' an at the same time brmgs the toproller'lO i contact with the low roller' 9 and the dip I roll into theliquid. Behind and above the delivery roller 10 I mount a roll of paper 32 which remarried right rod 18 tightens for the purpose here-- sioning roller, and
suitable supports 34. The spindle l and delivery roller 10 being stopped and the dip starting lever 31 is then pressed down at its front end'causing the spindle l and delivery roller 10 to start and the dip roller 27 to enter the liquid. It will thus be understood, then the whole of the spindles of the frame are stopped, by means of the shaft 94 the p levers 27 are raised out of the trough carrying the paper strips or other material 6 clear of the liquid and also that when the spindle 1 and delivery roller 10 are stopped, at the same time, the dip lever 26 of the spindle is lifted clear of the liquid, thus preventing the paper strip or other material from getting over-damped and weakened.
aving now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is I. In a machine of the character described, a delivery roller, a damping roller over which the sliver passes, a liquid container into which said damping roller dips, a stop motion mechanism for halting the feed, and means operative u on the actuation of said stop mechanism or lifting said damping roller from the liquid container.
