4619. Smith, C. W. Feb. 24. Fuel; coking.-Blocks of fuel are made by moulding a mixture of pitch or other binding- material with partially coked or charred coal, sawdust, garbage, or other refuse. The partial coking or charring is carried out in an oven comprising a cylindrical chamber 1, provided with a cooling-compartment 17, and a conical floor 2, and corrugated hearth 3 down which the charge is swept into the cooling-chamber by brushes 14 carried by revolving arms 13. The space between the floor 2 and hearth 3 is heated by means of gas and air introduced by pipes 18, 19, respectively ; the gases given off during the heating of the coal &c. are led away by means of a pipe 20, and may be used for the purpose of heating the oven. A cover 8 for the oven is formed with a flange 7 which rests in a water trough 6. The coal or other material in a crushed and dried state is supplied to the hearth through the annular space between a conical block 12, on the shaft 10, and the lower part of a hopper 9.
