Coiling. - A machine for coiling rope &c. is fed with the rope by a winch and lays it in superimposed layers which are non-circular, thus preventing the rope from becoming tangled. The rope is received by a pulley 18 on a sleeve 16, which can be connected by a friction clutch 19 to a shaft 10 driven by a chain 11 from the winch. The rope passes through a sleeve 32 to a guide 28 carried by an extension 30 of a wheel 27, which is alternately accelerated and decelerated, although the speed of rotation of the shaft 10 is constant. A gear .17 on the sleeve 16 drives an annular gear 20, within which is eccentrically mounted a vertical spindle 22 carrying a gear 26 meshing with the wheel 27. A pawl 24, pivoted on the spindle 22 and extending radially across the upper face of the gear 20, is engaged by one of a number of crown-teeth 25 thereon, and imparts the varying angular velocity to the wheel 27. The back of the teeth 25 are sloped so as to provide an overrunning ratchet gear for the rope guides. In order that a rope, the end of which is not available. can be inserted in the guide, the wheel 27, its bearing 31, and the sleeve 32 are slotted to form a passage, through which the rope may be passed. The sleeve 30 is rotatable through a suitable angle so as to bring the slot into or out of alignment with the slot in the bearing 31, and it is provided with a handle to lock it in position. A jockey-pulley 38 carried by a spring-restrained lever 39 pivoted at 40 co-operates with the pulley 18 and is retracted therefrom by a lever 43 having a tooth 45 bearing against a cam-surface 46 on the lever 39. The machine may be used in conjunction with that described in Specification 188,968, [Class 78 (v), Winding and paying-out apparatus &c.].
