Winding-machines; thread-guides; stop-apparatus, non-automatic.-In a cheese-winding machine, a traverse lever with an unvarying reciprocation is pivoted on the framing and combined with a thread guide, so that as the diameter of the cheese increases the delivery point of the guide is moved nearer to the pivot of the lever, thereby reducing the length of traverse of the yarn, and forming bevelled ends on the cheese. The lever 12 is engaged bv a stud 14 on the traverse bar 13, and the thread guide 15 is pivoted at the lower end of the lever and rests on the cheese. A doublejawed cheese-holder 6 is formed with bearings 6<2> to carry a spindle 7 and a wooden tube 8 which is pressed against the face of a drum 4. As the cheese grows, the curl 15<1> of the guide is raised, and thereby brought nearer to the pivot stud 11. In a modification, applied to a vertical spindle machine, a lever 37, Figs. 4 & 5, is mounted on a traverse shaft 36 in front of each spindle 33, and a thread guide 38 is pivoted to the inner end of the lever. A guide-wire 40 is mounted between the thread guide and a wooden tube 35 on the spindle, and during winding is pressed against the yarn by a spring 38<4> acting on the thread guide. As the cheese grows, the distance of the yarn-delivery point from the shaft 36 is gradually reduced. The thread guide, has a slotted end with bevelled edges 38<2> so that the thread as it rests on the guide-wire will pass into the slot when winding commences. A pivoted brake-lever 43 carries at its upper end a band-tightening pulley 45 which is held in position by a slide-rod 46. When the rod is withdrawn, a spring 44 at the lower end of the lever presses a brake-leather 43<5> against the spindle wharve 33<1>.
