Breech actions, sliding breech-block safety appliances. - A safety device for semi-automatic and other rifles of the kind in which the rear of the breech-body is closed by a sliding plate g, comprises a rotary longitudinal bar or tube h, mounted at the rear of the body, and having at the rear end an operating- lever m and at the front end a cam projection j adapted, when the safety bar is rotated while the cocking-piece is in the cocked position, to engage the cocking-piece d and withdraw it from contact with the sear d'. A projection q prevents the bar h from being rotated into the " safe " position except when the breechbolt e is in the forward positicn. The bar h is locked against axial movement by the closing-plate g, which itself is locked by the operating-lever m which engages a groove o in the plate.
