Circular machines; needles.-Cylinder or dial needles for a plain knitting-machine or the primary or secondary needles, or both, of a rib machine are made composite, one element A being provided with a loop-drawing hook 10 to take the new loop z, while the other part B is preferably in the form of a slide which is provided with a return bend hook 12 adapted on retraction by cams C acting on the butt b to enter and engage a previous loop y on the hook 10 and cast it off over the new loop. The point of the hook 12 is received when retracted in a groove 11 in a raised part of the element A and a thinned tail piece B<1> of the part B fits slidingly in an open groove e in the side of the rear part of the element A. The tail piece B<1> is slightly bent sideways to form a spring which acts frictionally on the side walls of the containing groove of the dial. The hook 12 may be provided with an outwardly projecting point 13, Fig. 10, to engage loops of the fabric at a desired time, so that the projection of the part B may carry the loops to a position where the rising cylinder needles P<1> can enter and engage desired loops for transfer purposes as described in Specification 11481/06. Fig. 12 shows knitting cams 23, 24, and 25, and Fig. 13 shows transfer cams 26, 27 for this purpose. Both sets of cams are independently insertible and withdrawable, and are mounted and actuated in the same manner as the cams a, b, c described in Specification 102,711. The parts B may be bevelled at 14 to deflect any rising cylinder needles P<1> that should happen to strike the parts B when projected. The central outer ends p of the hooks of the cylinder needles, when of the latch-needle type, may be made somewhat pointed to enable them to pierce the fabric loops more easily.
