Abstract
184,229. Bruce, R. A. April 26, 1921. Ball and float valves; lift valves; actuating- mechanism.-A discharge valve for the petrol tank of a seaplane is provided with toggle mechanism for rapid opening in emergency, and with float-operated mechanism for closing the valve in the event of immersion in water. A valve seating a is secured to the bottom of the tank band carries a guiding-socket d for the valve stem e The valve f is faced with resilient material g to provide a tight closure. The seating-member carries two brackets h supporting a transverse shaft j which is connected to a rod s for operating the valve. The shaft i is connected to the valve by a shank m and lever r, which form a toggle device. A spring u ensures that the toggle-links are brought to rest in a stable position beyond their dead-centres. The valve may be adjusted more tightly to its seating by means of a screw n. The shaft j carries a lever w and float y, so that if the seaplane settles on the water, the float rotates the shaft by means of the projection 4 and pin 3, and thus clcses the valve and prevents ingress of water to the tank.
