Carbon.-Seaweed &c. is incinerated at a moderate temperature under such conditions that a light finely divided ash containing a large proportion of vegetable carbon is obtained, which ash is lixiviated while still hot. The seaweed is fed through a door 4 on to the upper perforated bed 2 of a furnace made of materials not effected by algae or products of their combustion, through which pass the products of combustion from the sole 1, and is pushed forward to the far end of the furnace where it falls out to the lower bed 2, being turned over in the process. From the lower bed 2 it falls to the sole 1 where it is ignited. Ports in the end and sides enable the air supply to be regulated. The drying of the weed may be facilitated by passing the products of combustion of an auxuliary furnace over the beds 2. Doors 5 serve for the manipulation of the charge, and for removing the ash. The ash may be lixiviated directly or it may be loaded from platforms 11, 12 into lorries &c. to be conveyed to a central lixiviating station while still hot.
