Abstract

183,185. Carpmael, W. P., (Bagley & Sewall Co.). March 17, 1921. Cylinders; wet presses and couch rolls; suction apparatus.-The paper web is freed from the wire cloth by air pressure applied within a suction couch roll 1, Fig. 3, the air issuing through ports 32 acting as a layer or cushion to support the web across the gap between the wire cloth W and the first wet felt 8. In the gap a roll 6 is situated. The current of air is distributed substantially evenly along the roll, and means are provided for varying the air pressure at any point as desired. For this purpose part of the casting of the suction' chamber is partitioned off at 23, Fig. 7, to form a pressure chamber which by means of an adjustable valve 35, Fig. 4, delivers air to passages 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, through valves 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, Fig. 9, each having a guide-surface 45 sliding in grooves 46, said valves being secured to threaded rods 57 and adjusted separately by nuts thereon.
