Abstract
183,125. Westinghouse Gear & Dynamometer Co., (Assignees of Kasley, A. T.). July 12, 1921, [Convention date]. Universal joints.-The coupling-members have opposed recesses in which are located disc-shaped transmitting-members with spherical edges. The discs may be subjected to compression or shear, and accommodate endlong or angular motion of the shaft first by rolling and subsequently by sliding, stops being preferably provided to act as fulcra whereby the extent of the sliding is minimized. In the form shown in Fig. 1, coupling- members 12, 13 have interfitting segmental portions 14, 15, and carry aligned cylindrical members 19 with overlapping semicylindrical extensions 18, the spherical-edged discs 16 lying in a groove 23 therein between shoulders 24. These shoulders serve as fulcra when the limit of the rolling-action has been reached. A cover 26 may be fitted. As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, discs 42 are arranged in shear between a member 32 and the flange 34 of a member 33. Stops 43, 44 are provided on semicylindrical bushings 38, 39 and on a detachable ring 45 bolted to the member 33.
