Abstract

573,222. Universal joints. HADFIELD, B. M. Sept. 20, 1943, No. 15377. [Class 80 (ii)] A universal joint connecting shafts 1, 2 comprises brackets 3, 4 fixed to the shafts and having bearings 12, 13 for four rods 5 ... 8, extending from a centre boss 9. The rods 5 ... 8 may be fixed to the boss 9 and the bearings 12, 13 may permit of rotary and axial movement of the rods. Alternatively, the bearings may permit rotary movement only of the rods. In this case the rods are slidable in the boss 9. Again, the rods may be fixed to the brackets 3, 4, and have sliding and rotary freedom relatively to the boss. In each case, the brackets 3, 4 are of springy material so as to permit a small amount of twist to the bearing ends so that sudden changes of torque may be accommodated. The hub 11 of one of the brackets 4 may be splined to its shaft 2. In another construction, rods 15, 16, 19, 20, Fig. 2, extending from hubs 17, 18 on shafts 1, 2, pass through bearings 26 in lugs 22 extending from an annular or cross-shaped member 21. The lugs 22 or member 21 are springy. The rods may be fixed to the hubs 17, 18 and slide and rotate in the bearings 26, or they may slide in the hubs and rotate in the bearings, or they may be fixed to the bearings and slide and rotate in the hubs.
