Abstract
182,895. Calverley, J. E., and Highfield, W. E. April 8, 1921. Commutators. - A commutator comprises a foundation formed of a pair of insulating- plates A, B, each having a circular aperture or circular external form, and having within or around them conducting segments E, J interleaved and spaced apart, each segment having one or more radially-extending lugs F, G, and K, L by which it is secured to the foundation, the lugs of adjacent segments being attached to different plates. The segments are connected to the windings by means of the connectors N, O. The slabs A, B are assembled on each side of a circular metal frame C, and rest at their lower horizontal edges on the recessed brackets D. Each segment is tapered at the back and is long enough to project with clearance under the plate by which it is not supported. The portion of the segment betwaen the lugs may also be spaced away from the plate to ensure efficient ventilation. The invention is particularly applicable to converting-apparatus of the type described in Specifications 140,853, 150,824 and 150,825, [all in Class 38 (ii), Electric currents, Converting &c.].
