Cutting vegetables.-A turnip-cutter l mounted on a carriage a and operated by a motor k which also propels the carriage is fitted with means for disconnecting the travelling-wheels from the driving-gear without the use of a clutch. The wheels b are connected by a chain w to the spindle m of the cutter which is driven by a chain t', shaft o with fast and idle pulleys r, and belt gearing s from the motor. The chain w is sufficiently slack to permit its removal from the sprocket v, the slack being taken up when the machine is to be propelled by means of an idle pulley v<1> carried by an adjustable slotted bracket v<2> bolted to the frame a. The belt s can be shifted by a fork y and a hand-lever. A swivel wheel e is fitted to enable the device to be steered.
