Actuating by pulsating fluid pressure; air traps; diaphragm pumps; pumps for corrosive liquids; waste and residual liquid, catching and returning.-In a pumping device of the type comprising a diaphram 6 reciprocated by and in hydraulic connection with a reciprocating plunger 3, suction and delivery of the liquid pumped taking place through valves in communication with the pipe 10, the return of leakage past the plunger into the cup 2 on the forcing stroke is effected past the cup-leather 4 on the suction stroke. A spring 7 on the plunger side of the diaphragm, and accessible for adjustment by removing the cap 8, effects the suction stroke of the diaphragm if there is insufficient head of the liquid pumped. In the event of the plunger being constructed to effect suction also, the cup 2 communicates with the barrel at a point a little below that of the piston at the top of its stroke, valves opening into the barrel being provided if necessary. Air collecting near the diaphragm, which is vertical, escapes by the passages 11, 12 on opening the outlet valves 13, 13<A>. These valves are surrounded by liquid contained in the cups 14, each of which has a capacity not less than that of the plunger to prevent entrance of air, when the pump is working.
