Abstract

179,419. Smith, R. H., Mosey, H. Y., and Smith, F. S. April 26, 1921. Packing, metallic.-Stuffing-box packing consists of soft metal rings 1, 2, coned externally and internally respectively, and separated by hard metal rings 3 coned both internally and externally. The packing is tightened against the rod and the stuffing-box by the pressure of a follower 8 and cap 9. The aperture in the ring 3 may be cf larger diameter than the rod, in order to form an oil space. The wearing face of the ring 1 may be grooved. Two sets of packing-rings may be separated by a lantern ring 7, to which lubricant is supplied. Corrugated washers may be placed at the ends of the stuffing-box.
