Draining; packing, non-metallic; followers, bushes, and the like; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Packing for a turbine &c. shaft consists of segmental graphite, rings 17, Fig. 1, contained in chambers 12 formed in the casing. Each chamber is closed at the inner end bv a disc 13 formed with a packing-groove 14 and at the outer end by a cap 15 formed with a helical groove. Each packing-ring is compressed by a garter spring 18, the ends of which are connected by a saddle-piece notched to engage a pin 19 secured in the disc 13. The packing-rings are pressed apart by an interposed disc 20, notched to engage the pin 19, and slit radially to form fingers which are bent, alternately, in opposite directions. A draining passage 23 in the cap 15 communicates with a draining passage 24 formed in the casing, the draining-passages at the two sides of the turbine casing being connected by a transverse passage, which communicates with a drainpipe. The chambers 12 are drained by similar passages, which do not communicate with the passages 24. A plate 28 fitting the shaft is secured to the cap 15. In a modification, one of the packing-rings 17 is housed in a groove in the cap 15, formed with a spigot entering the chamber 12. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the packing-chamber contains two packing-rings housed in rings 34, 36 of L-section, and a packing-ring is also housed in a recess in the cap 33. Rotation of the packing is prevented by pins 38, 39, and each packing-ring is pressed towards the exterior of the casing by a spring disc 20.
