Abstract

Limbs, artificial.-The joints of artificial limbs are locked in desired positions by the frictional engagement of a spring carried by one limb member with a cylindrical block, around which the spring is wound, fast upon the pivot pin carried by the other limb member. A knee joint, Fig. 1, normally unlocked, is locked by the weight of the wearer being put on the lower limb member and comprises two springs E carried by a bracket C attached to the lower limb member and loosely coiled round a cylinder A<1> fast on the pivot pin A which is carried by the thigh B. When weight is put on the lower limb member, a pivoted link C<1> and slotted link C<2> permit the bracket C to rise relatively to the pivot pin, causing the spring frictionally to engage the cylinder to lock the joint. The elbow-joint, Figs. 3 and 4, is normally locked through springs G<1> carried by the framework B<1> of the upper limb member engaging drums G fast on the pivot pin F carried by the lower member, being held in contact therewith by springs J. The joint is unlocked when a cord H<2> attached to a lever H<1> is pulled, the motion of the lever H<1> being transmitted to a second lever H acting in opposition to the springs J thereby releasing the springs G' from the drums. An ordinary operating-cord K for the lower limb member is provided. The device may also be used for securing artificial hands &c. to wrist sockets, as shown in Fig. 5. Springs M<2> carried by the wrist socket normally bind upon a pin L projecting from the hand-plate to retain it in desired positions. The loose ends of the springs are attached to a spring- pressed plunger N which is pressed inwards to release the joint.
