Abstract

114,653. Hobbs, E. W. April 10, 1917 Limbs, artificial.-The moving parts of a jointed limb are held locked in any position, in a locking pawl to which the operating cord is directly connected. The invention is described in connexion with an elbow joint. The forearm B is secured to a strap engaging the ends of a pin A<3> passing through a tube A<2> carried by the hemispherical lower end of the upper arm A, The locking-device comprises a lever C<2> pivoted to the forearm, one end of the lever engaging holes A<5> in, or in a strap attached to, the upper arm, while movement of the other end of the lever is limited by a stirrup C<5>. An elastic or spring connexion D causes the end of the lever to engage the holes normally. The operating cord E for the limb is attached to harness worn by the patient and serves first to release the pawl or lever, and afterwards to flex the elbow. In a modification, ratchet teeth are substituted for the holes, and the end of the lever is formed as a pawl or pawls, which enable the upper arm to be swung upwards and locked. Guide-pulleys are provided for the control cords of any hand mechanism, and a slot to accommodate movement of any wrist-twisting mechanism contained in the upper arm.
