Abstract

171,349. Tekniske Forsogsaktieselskab. Nov. 9, 1920, [Convention date]. Machinery, utilizing inertia to obtain movoments in.- A crank linkage comprises a reacting inertia. member and is applied for driving power r hammers. hack-saws, vibratory aircraft propellers, &c. The essence of the device appears in Fig. 3. A pulley G mounted in a block V is connected by a crank A' and rod B' to a mass W, the masses V and W being both slidable in guides C. When the pulley drives, the masses V, W reciprocate in opposite directions, and according to the invention, the mass or block V is caused to do work. The effect of the inertia of the resisting mass W is increased by making the elements A', B' equal in length, so that the mass W passes from side to side of the mass V. Lateral thrusts are eliminated by employing a duplicate linkage A<2>, B<2>. The active mass V may be positioned and controlled by adjustable resilient buffers. In the application to hammers, eccentrics replace the crank and rod. as shown in Figs 6 and 7. A shaft 0 driven through a sliding coupling drives eccentrics A<1>, A<2>, A<3> journaled on a, gudgeon R upon the mass V, the eccentrics A<2>, A<3> being driven in the opposite direction to the eccentric A'. Enveloping eccentrics B<1>, B<2>, B<3> connect to the resisting mass W and form part of the resisting mass. Such a hammer is shown in Fig. 15. The mass V is controlled by buffers X, U actuated by handwheels Z<1>, Z<2>, and the shaft 0 is driven from a motor D through a shock-absorbing spring Y. A form suitable for driving aircraft propellers is shown in Fig. 8. The vibratory propeller carries the mass V and a fixed sun gear S<1>. An arm A carrying planet gears S<2>, S<3> is driven through a flexible shaft O. The mass W is carried on an arm B secured to the gear S' so as to be reciprocated past the mass V in a horizontal path.
