Cupping.-Machines for making paper cups from a length or superposed lengths of material, of the kind comprising upper and lower annular dies to shape preliminarily one or more cups in the material, means for cutting out the shaped cups from the lengths of material and an inner plunger passing through the lower annular die to complete the formation of the cups fare provided with feeding and withdrawing means acting continuously on the lengths of material for presenting successive portions thereof to the shaping and cutting dies, the withdrawing means being such as to permit the material to remain stationary during the action of the dies thereon. In the arrangement shown, a plurality of paper strips 46, 47, 48, 49 are fed bv feed-rollers 25, 26, over a work-table 55, in which are fixed the lower shaping-die 56 co-operating with the upper shaping-die 80 and a ring 59 of steel, wood, fibre, rubber, or other material cooperating with the cutting-ring 75. The latter is mounted on a reciprocating carrier 70 connected by a pin 76 and adjustable eccentric bush 77 to a connecting-rod 78 operated by an eccentric 11 on a shaft 8 driven by gearing 9, 14 from the main shaft 15. The upper shaping-die 80 is mounted on the carrier 81 connected by a pin 85 and adjustable eccentric bush 89 to a connecting-rod 86 operated by the eccentric 12 on the shaft 8, a suitable space 88 or lost motion being provided between the eccentric 12 and its strap 87 to allow the die 80 to rest on the cups while the innet plunger 90 is pushing them through the lower shaping die. The plunger 90 is carried by a slide 92 actuated by a connecting-rod 97 and crank-pin 100. In operation, the die 80 descends first, thereby arresting the advance of the strip material 50 and shaping the cup therein, then the cutter 75 is lowered to detach the cupped portion, which is thereupon pushed through the lower die 56 and completed by the plunger 90. The punchedout strip material is withdrawn from the worktable by the rollers 36, 37, which are of yielding material such as brushes to permit the strip material remaining stationary whilst under the action of the dies, and are driven at a higher speed than the feeding-rollers 25, 26 so as to straighten out the slack formed in the strip material during the period it is held by the dies. A steam or gas heater 105 is provided round the lower part of the die 56.
