Abstract
10,041. Watzke, E., and Nagy, I. May 31. Capsules, bottle &c.-Relates to a machine for making bottle and like capsules from a continuous strip of tin-foil. The metal strip is drawn from a roll by the feed-rollers 25, which are rotated intermittently by pawl and ratchet gearing 30, 28, the pawl 30 being actuated by the adjustable crank-pin 32 on the shaft 35, driven by chain gearing 36 &c. from the main driving-shaft 6. The rollers 25 feed the strip under the punch 42, which is reciprocated vertically by the crank-pin 47 on the shaft 35, to cut out circular blanks from the strip. The spring-controlled sleeve 45 strips the perforated strip from the punch as the latter rises. Each blank, as it is cut, falls through the guide-chute 49 into the pocket 51, Figs. 1 and 11, in front of the drawing-press punch 54, which is reciprocated by the crank 57, and shapes the blank to cup form in the die 50. The stripping-sleeve 59, which removes the cupped blank from the punch 54, is connected to the cam-actuated cross-bar 60, the sleeve being advanced with the punch, and retracted prior to the withdrawal of the latter into position, as shown in Fig. 11, to strip off the blank. The cupped blank, when removed from the punch, falls through the guide-hopper 68 into the forked holder 66, which is then advanced by the crank 71 on the shaft 13 into alignment with the mandrel 76. The mandrel is provided with a spring-controlled sleeve 80, and is rotated at a high speed. When the blank is in position, the sliding rod 84, which carries a revoluble head 89 provided with a rubber ring 90, is advanced by the cam 88, so as to force the blank from the holder 66 on to the sleeve 80, the holder being then withdrawn by the spring 72. The blank is then drawn out to finished form on the mandrel 76 by the pressure or spinning roller 92, which, as it is advanced by the crank 98, forces back the sleeve 80. The roller is adjustably mounted on the transverse slide 93, which is mounted on the longitudinal slide 97 connected to the crank 98. The slide 93 is operated by the cam 105, through the rod 104 and lever 96, the spring 106 serving to withdraw the roller from contact with the capsule when the latter is finished. To prevent the capsule from being thrown out laterally by its rotating motion, when stripped from the mandrel by the sleeve 80, the lever 110, which carries a small brake shoe of leather &c., is actuated by a pin on the gear-wheel 15, to bring the brake into contact with the capsule, and so check its rotation, while it is being stripped off.
