Abstract

169,724. Huth Ges., Dr. E. F., and Opponheimer, J. Oct. 2, 1920, [Convention date]. Condensers.-Relates to means for utilizing existing telegraph, telephone, or high-tension power lines, for transmitting high-frequency currents modulated by signal frequencies. The capacity effects of the suspending-insulators are utilized to transfer the modulated signal current to or from the carrier line, or for bridging over high-impedance interruptions, and also for tuning the line to the fundamental frequency of the signal currents. As shown in Fig. 1, an ordinary telegraph line l is carried by an insulator i fastened by a clamp a to a second insulator s mounted on the pole m. Both insulators are preferably fitted with internal and external metal coatings u so as to act as condensers of definite capacity. The coupling-connections for the signal currents are shown at K, C. Fig. 2 shows an insulator suitable for a high-power line l, and fitted with metal coatings m. Fig. 3 shows the coupling K, C applied between the two top insulators h of a high-power suspension system using Hewlett insulators. Other forms of insulators and methods of utilizing their capacity effects are described.
