Abstract

169,275. Schmidt, W. June 22, 1920. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers. - Relates to cruising-plant for warships, and consists in using an internal-combustion engine and steam-engine wherein at low speeds the steam for the engine is obtained from the exhaust and water-cooling systems of the reciprocating engine, which steam is progressively supplemented by boiler steam as the speed is increased. For full speed, main turbines are employed, and the cruising-plant is closed down. The cylinder jackets are connected to a common collecting drum from which the steam is drawn for the engine. The plant comprises a propeller shaft H on which is freely mounted a pinion J with claw coupling K, Figs. 2 and 3, the pinion J being driven by an internal-combustion engine A through a wheel L and by a turbine B through a wheel M. A feed-pump F draws from a feedwater tank E, which is supplied from the condenser C and delivers the feed-water to a coil b in the exhaust-gasheater G, from which the water goes by the pipe c to the drum N by the pipe c<1> or by the pipe c<2> to a boiler. From the vessel N the water passes to the bottom of the waterjackets d<1> - - d<6> up through the jackets, thence by steam-pipes e, e<1> - - e<6> to the top of the drum N. The steam-pipe f from the drum and steampipe g from the boiler are coupled to superheating- coils k in the exhaust-gasheater G, from which the steam-pipe m goes to the turbine B. The disposition of the plant in a ship may be varied; in one arrangement the main turbines T and condensers S, Fig. 4, are arranged in a forward compartment, and the cruising plant is placed aft. In cruising, one shaft is driven by the internalcombustion engine A and the other by a reciprocating steam-engine B, which utilizes the waste heat of the engine A, G being the waste heat unit and C the condenser. Clutches U are provided for cutting out the main plant when cruising.
