Abstract
166,385. Mills, M. W., and Bolton, J. May 3, 1920 Aerating. - An inverted rotary cone with curved radial blades d is used in the activatedsludge process to cause a circulation of the liquid and to spray the circulated liquid so that it falls through the atmosphere on to the surface of the liquid. The cone is open at the bottom and surrounded by a hopper f with a pipe g extending nearly to the bottom of the tank a. The cone is rotated from an electric motor e by bevel gearing and the motion of the cone causes the liquid to be drawn up the pipe. In a modification applicable for use in a flat-bottomed tank, scrapers attached to the lower end of the pipe g direct the sludge towards the pipe g, the pipe g with the hopper f being attached to and rotated by a central shaft. An arrangement of epicylic gearing is described for rotating at different speeds the shaft and a sleeve thereon carrying the cone.. In the case of a rectangular tank provided with a plurality of these aerating devices, the parts of the bottom not traversed by the rotary scrapers may be banked up so as to direct the sludge towards the scrapers. According to the Provisional Specification aerating-devices of the type described may be attached to a travelling carriage moving over a tank.
